Frequently Asked Questions

Ordering & Kit Activation

1. How do I check the status of my order or get my results?

Log in to your account or contact us with your order number and we’ll look up where things stand. Results are sent by email as soon as they’re ready — you don’t need to request them separately once your order number is registered.

2. How do I find my order number?

Your order number is generated when you complete an order on our website (iqbirdtesting.com) or when you register a kit purchased elsewhere (see below). It’s included in your confirmation email — search your inbox for “IQ Birdtesting” if you can’t find it.

3. I bought my kit on Amazon — how do I get an order number?

Amazon kits don’t come with an order number automatically. You’ll need to register the kit using its AMZ code at orders.iqbirdtesting.com/activate-your-kit. Once registration is complete, your order number is generated automatically.

4. Where do I find the AMZ code, and how do I register it?

The AMZ code is printed on the bottom corner of the white envelope that came with your kit. Enter it at orders.iqbirdtesting.com/activate-your-kit, then continue through checkout — the kit discount is applied automatically and your order number is issued at the end of that process.

5. Do I need to create an order before sending in my samples?

Yes. Every sample must be tied to an order created on our website before it’s shipped. We can’t process a sample that doesn’t have an order number attached to it.

6. What happens if I send samples without creating an order first?

We can still test them, but if our lab has to create the order for you manually, a 10% processing fee applies. Creating your order online first avoids this fee entirely.

7. What does “Bird ID” mean when I’m creating an order?

It’s simply a name you choose for your bird, so you (and we) can tell your birds apart if you’re testing more than one. It has no connection to the order number — you can use a pet name, a band number, or anything that’s easy for you to recognize.

8. What if I don’t know my bird’s exact species?

Enter the common name as best you can (e.g. “green cheek conure,” “sun conure,” “cockatiel”). The scientific name field is optional — leave it blank if you’re not sure.

Pricing & Payment

9. How much does testing cost?

DNA sexing starts at $15.99 per blood sample, $17.99 per feather sample, and $17.99 per eggshell sample. Disease testing starts at $22.99 and varies by test — check the specific test page for exact pricing. These prices cover lab processing only and don’t include the cost of a physical test kit.

10. Do you offer a discount for multiple samples or bulk orders?

Yes — pricing per sample drops at higher volumes (for example, a 25-blood-sample pack brings the price down to $14.99 each). This is especially useful for breeders testing multiple birds at once.

11. What payment methods do you accept?

Credit or debit card through PayPal, or credit card / e-check directly online at checkout. All payments are processed through our website — please don’t mail a physical check to the lab.

Sample Collection & Shipping

12. Which sample type do I need — blood, feather, or eggshell?

Feather and eggshell samples can only be used for DNA sexing. If you need disease testing in addition to sexing, you’ll need a blood sample.

13. How do I properly collect a feather sample?

Pluck the feather from the cloacal (vent) area. Make sure the calamus — the hollow shaft at the base of the feather — still has a small amount of skin or tissue attached, since that’s where the DNA comes from. A feather without any tissue at the base can’t be tested.

14. Where do I get the sample submission form?

Once your order is created on our website, a button to download the Sample Form appears automatically, and a copy is also emailed to you. If you need physical sample collection cards instead, you can request or print them at iqbirdtesting.com/request-sample-cards.

15. Can I drop off my samples in person instead of mailing them?

Yes — you’re welcome to drop samples off in an envelope in our mailbox at our Miami location. You’ll still need to create your order online first, the same as if you were mailing it in.

16. What if I have more than one bird to test?

Each bird’s samples need their own order. If you’re adding birds after your first order, simply create a separate order on our website for the additional samples.

Results & Sample Status

17. How long does it take to get results?

Results are typically ready within 2-3 business days after your samples arrive at our lab (not from the date you ship them — shipping time is separate).

18. What if my sample hasn’t arrived at the lab yet?

If we haven’t logged your sample as received, we’ll let you know as soon as it arrives. If it’s been longer than expected for your shipping method, reach out with your order number and we’ll check on it.

19. Do you test for diseases like PBFD, and what sample do you need?

Yes. For Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD) testing specifically, we require a blood sample — feather or eggshell samples can’t be used for disease testing. See our PBFD test page for full details.
